Lighting for a Study and a Desk: a Lamp That Works With You

In a study the light has two jobs: light the work surface well, and not tire the eyes after a few hours. Ceiling light alone is not enough, because it casts the shadow of your head and hands on the page. The answer is a good desk lamp.
What matters in a desk lamp
- Placement: right-handed writers put the lamp on the left, and vice versa, so the hand casts no shadow.
- A downward shade: the light should fall on the desk, not the eyes. A green, amber or opaline glass shade hides the bulb.
- An adjustable arm: a jointed reading lamp lets you aim the light at the document, keyboard or book.
- Warm but not weak light: a warm LED bulb of moderate output suits most lamps.
Lighting a home study
A study needs layers too: a desk lamp, general ceiling light and another lamp for a reading corner. In a small room, a floor lamp beside the armchair saves desk space.
A lamp for a library or reading corner
Beside bookshelves, choose soft, diffused light that lights the shelves without glare. A green-shaded banker's lamp or an arched floor lamp gives the classic library feel. See also a desk lamp for a lawyer.
