Bedroom Lighting: a Bedside Lamp and Light That Calms

A bedroom needs different light from the rest of the house. It is where you wind down at the end of the day, so the light should be warm, low and soft. Strong white ceiling light does exactly the opposite.
A bedside lamp
The bedside lamp is the most important light in the bedroom. A small lamp with a frosted or opaline glass shade gives enough light to read by without waking whoever is asleep on the other side. The shade should sit at roughly shoulder height when sitting up in bed.
A pair of wall sconces instead
When bedside tables are small, or you want them clear, a pair of wall sconces on either side of the bed is an elegant solution. The shop has pairs of brass and bronze sconces with glass shades that suit this well.
Which bulb for a bedroom
- Warm tone: 2700K or lower. Warm yellow light is calming in the evening.
- Low output: softer light, or a dimmable bulb, suits a bedroom.
- A shade that hides the bulb: light is easier on the eyes when the bulb is not directly visible.
