Chandeliers and Lamps for a Synagogue: Light That Honours the Space

In a synagogue, lighting is more than a technical detail. It shapes the atmosphere of prayer, honours the Ark and tells you that you have entered a special place. An antique brass or bronze chandelier, or a row of candle-style wall sconces along the walls, gives a sanctuary a warmth and presence that new fixtures rarely achieve.
A central chandelier for the sanctuary
In most synagogues the central chandelier is the piece everyone looks up at. Five-arm brass and bronze chandeliers with scrolled arms and candle-cup sockets suit a prayer hall especially well: they recall the lamps that lit synagogues generations ago, and they hold their own under a high ceiling.
Crystal chandeliers, such as our two-tier crystal waterfall chandelier, suit a hall that calls for more sparkle and diffused light, such as a celebration hall or the lobby.
Wall sconces along the sanctuary and the women's gallery
Candle-style wall sconces, in pairs or in a row, follow the walls and light the seating without glare. The shop has single, double and triple candle sconces in brass, bronze and gilt finishes. If you need several matching sconces for one wall, ask us what we have of each model.
What to check before choosing
- Ceiling height: under a high ceiling the rod or chain can be lengthened so the chandelier hangs at the right height above the congregation.
- Light output: an antique chandelier can be rewired for warm LED bulbs that light well and save energy.
- Consistency: in a large hall, plan the central chandelier and the sconces together so their finish and tone match.
- Donations and dedications: a chandelier or a pair of sconces is a common gift to a synagogue, in memory of a loved one or to mark a celebration.
Restoration and adjustments
An old chandelier already hanging in the synagogue can be restored too: cleaned, missing parts replaced and rewired. See our chandelier and lamp restoration page and the article on customizing antique lamps.
