Lamp Electrical Repair: When to Rewire and What It Involves

In antique lamps the part that ages fastest is the electrics. Wires, insulation and sockets have been through decades, and some were not built to today's safety standards. An electrical repair returns the lamp to safe everyday use without changing how it looks.
Signs a lamp needs electrical repair
If you smell burning or see sparks, unplug the lamp immediately and don't use it until it is checked.
- It doesn't turn on, or only works when the cord is moved.
- It flickers even with a new bulb.
- The cord is cracked, brittle or taped.
- The socket is loose, scorched or blackened.
- The switch sticks or doesn't respond.
What an electrical repair includes
- Rewiring: replacing all the internal wiring and the external cord.
- A new socket: fitted for LED bulbs where needed.
- Switch and plug: a new inline or lamp switch and a standard plug.
