How to Choose a Lamp Shade: for Table Lamps, Wall Sconces and Chandeliers

The shade decides how a lamp looks and how its light feels. The same base can look classic with a pleated shade, modern with smooth glass, or rustic with parchment. Changing the shade is one of the simplest ways to renew a lamp.
Fabric, parchment or glass
- Fabric: soft, even light. Pleated shades in cream, white or black suit classic table and floor lamps.
- Parchment: warm, slightly orange light, suited to rustic or vintage lamps.
- Glass: opaline, frosted, amber or cut glass. Durable, easy to clean, and the glass colour tints the light.
Large or small: proportions
- Table lamp shades: the bottom diameter is usually close to the base height, and the shade about two-thirds of the base height.
- Large shades: for floor lamps and tall living-room table lamps; they spread light widely.
- Small shades: for bedside lamps, wall sconces and chandelier arms.
Shades for wall sconces and chandeliers
Sconces and chandeliers use small shades, usually several identical ones. When replacing one, find one that matches the others in shape and tone: measure the neck diameter and bring one of the existing shades. See also replacement glass for lamps and chandeliers.
Changing a shade at the shop
Bring a lamp and match a shade on the spot from the fabric and glass shades in the shop; some fabric shades come in several colours. More in customizing antique lamps.
